Big Zion AME Zion Church is a historical Methodist congregation that was founded in 1860 in the township of Roseland, Louisiana by Rev. Solomon Johnson. Since it's initial days, Big Zion AME Zion Church, lovingly referenced as "The Mother Church" continues to advance God's Kingdom through ministry. Historically, the church's ministry included the Big Zion School providing educational advancement and opportunity to people of color. While the school is no longer operational in a post -segregation era, the Big Zion Church maintains strong ties to the community in our support of uplifting all people through education, civic engagement, and health awareness as well as ministering to their spiritual needs.
Since the days of Rev. Solomon Johnson, many pastors have led this congregation rooted in the Scripture, appointed by Bishops, sent by God, commanded by Christ to "go" and led by the Holy Spirit. Our current pastor, Rev. Errick L. Baldwin has served as the Senior Pastor since 2014. The ministry of Big Zion is complemented and strengthened by the gifts and graces of all ordained clergy, Rev. Walter Harrison, Rev. Katherine Thomas, and Rev. Brenda Campbell. Big Zion is part of the Roseland District, the Louisiana Conference, and the Southwestern Delta Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church.
